HURST COMPETITION PLUS RESTORATION AND REBUILDING SERVICE. WE CAN MAKE YOUR SHIFTER LIKE NEW AGAIN!
Let us transform your Competition Plus shifter from worst…
To Hurst!
Do you have a Hurst Competition Plus shifter that has seen better days? We can make it function, feel, and look brand new.
We offer several different options for rebuilding your Hurst Competition Plus shifter so you can have it rebuilt according to your needs and budget.
For ALL rebuilds of Hurst Competition Plus shifters, we perform a COMPLETE disassembly of every single part of your shifter during the rebuild process regardless of which optional services (described later) that you choose.
In addition to performing a complete mechanical overhaul, we also perform a cosmetic restoration as well. We ultrasonically clean all of your parts and follow that with sandblasting to remove rust then we paint and clearcoat all outer non-moving parts. When you get your shifter back it will feel AND look like new.
All of that is included in our standard service!
BEFORE AND AFTER
STANDARD REBUILD AND RESTORATION
Our standard rebuild and restoration service includes a complete disassembly of your shifter. We approach a standard rebuild planning to re-use all functional internal parts in your shifter and replace only those parts that are not fit for re-use or are missing/incorrect.
Since we have no way of knowing which parts will need replaced until we disassemble your shifter, we can't give you an exact parts cost until we have it taken apart and can inspect all the parts in your shifter. Typically, most rebuilds require less than $30 in parts that need to be replaced. We have an option described below to replace all of your internal parts (except for the shift gates) which is $90 and a worst case scenario. It is extremely rare for us to have to replace all internal parts.
Our Hurst Competition Plus / Super Shifter Standard Rebuild and Restoration service includes all of the following services:
- Disassemble ALL parts of your shifter.
- Clean and de-grease all parts thoroughly.
- Ultrasonic cleaning of all parts to remove any remaining grease in hard to reach areas and remove light rust.
- Inspect all of your parts to determine which parts will need replaced. We will get in touch with you to let you know which parts will need replaced and the cost to replace them before proceeding.
- Sandblast all parts to remove all rust inside and out. 30 minutes of sandblasting time is included. That’s plenty of time for most shifters. If your shifter is really rusty, additional sandblasting will be billed at $40 per hour. We will let you know if it looks like your shifter will need additional sandblasting time when we contact you about what parts need replaced.
- Re-inspect all parts after sandblasting to make sure no additional defects are revealed after all the rust is removed. We’ll inform you of any new defects that are found.
- Replace any existing components that are either missing or damaged after your approval. If you choose the “Replace all internals” option described below then we’ll replace all of the wear items in your shifter with new parts at this point.
- Paint the outer case, rear cover, bridge plate, and top of the carrier/receiver. Basically everything you can see on the outside of the shifter.
- Clearcoat the parts that get painted.
- Grease all internal components with high quality, water resistant Mobil 1 grease.
- Re-assemble all parts.
- Test your shifter to make sure everything is nice and smooth and to distribute the grease inside the shifter.
- If anything doesn’t feel correct then make adjustments and disassemble as necessary to correct the problem and re-test. Repeat until everything is right.
- All rebuilds get a new stainless steel nylon locknut for the pivot bolt, new stainless steel wave washer for pivot bolt, new nylon washer for the pivot bolt, and 2 new roll pins for the shifter selector. These are included at no additional cost.
- Includes a 1 year warranty on all labor and any new parts that we install in your shifter. See below for the terms of the warranty.
The price for our Standard Rebuild and Restore, which includes all of the above work is only $160!
*Any parts that need replaced will add additional cost. Most rebuilds need less than $30 in parts.
OPTIONAL SERVICES
The following are the optional services that we offer that you can order to enhance your shifter:
ALL NEW INTERNALS $90
Replace all internal parts except the shift gates with new Hurst parts. Normally we re-use your existing parts that are in functional condition. If you want, we will replace all the internal parts of your shifter except for the shift gates with this option. You can see which parts get replaced with new parts in the image. It is pretty much every part except for the handle receiver, case parts and gates.
ZINC PLATE INTERNALS $40
Zinc plate the shift gates and shims. This is to prevent them from rusting. It is not for cosmetic purposes. If your springs are not already zinc coated then we will plate them as well. The other components are high nickel steel or stainless steel so this will address the items that are prone to rust. You can order this whether we are re-using your existing parts or replacing all of them with the “NEW INTERNALS” option.
ZINC PLATE AND POLISH OUTER CASE $60
Zinc plate and polish the outside case, back cover and bridge plate instead of painting them. This will make them rust resistant. We will also polish them to give them a shiny appearance.
EASIER REVERSE $5
Modify the shifter so that it is easier to get into the reverse channel. If you’re struggling to get the shifter to “pop” to the left, this will make it easier. Please bear in mind that for most applications there isn’t a reverse lockout so the extra efforts to put the shifter into reverse is intentional. We will make it easier to get into reverse than it normally is, but not to the extent that it is super easy to get into reverse.
NYLON BUSHINGS $5
(INSERT IMAGE)
New set of 3 nylon bushings for your shift gate to linkage connection.
WARRANTY
Warranty Terms And Conditions: We cover all labor and new parts purchased from us for 1 year. We do not warranty any of your existing parts that are re-used. We don not warranty any damage resulting from abuse, mis-use, neglect or racing use. For a repair covered by warranty you are responsible for the cost to ship the shifter to us. If we determine the failure is due to our fault we will cover the cost to ship the shifter back to you. If we re-use an existing part that fails, we will cover the labor and cost to ship your shifter back to you; you’ll have to pay for the new part that we install during the warranty repair.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
You’ve got questions? We’ve got answers.
Should I rebuild my vintage shifter or buy a new one?
I was faced with the same decision years ago. That’s what got me started rebuilding these. First off, it’s less expensive to rebuild one than to buy a new one, even if you have to buy a used one for us to rebuild in some cases. Secondly, after we are done rebuilding it, you’ll have a better shifter than the new ones. The new ones are made in China. They aren’t total garbage, but they definitely aren’t as robust as the vintage Made in the USA ones. The new ones tend to feel looser and sloppier. Lastly, the vintage Hurst shifters hold their value.
What is your turnaround time?
Turnaround time is usually about 2 – 3 weeks after we receive your shifter. Please feel free to ask for the current turnaround time when you are getting ready to place your order.
Should I go for the “Replace ALL Internals” option or just replace parts that are worn?
It’s probably not necessary to replace all of your internals, but we really can’t give you an accurate answer to that question until we see your shifter and can get it dis-assembled in most cases. If you could send a picture looking into you shifter with the bottom cover removed (as shown below) that would help us to give an educated guess. Most of the internal parts in the vintage shifters hold up remarkably well. This is what it meant to be Made In The USA. It’s also why it’s much better to rebuild and restore these vintage shifters rather than buying a new China-made one. All of that being said, some people are just more comfortable replacing everything with all brand new parts. That’s cool with us. It’s your shifter and our goal is to make you thrilled with it!
I started trying to rebuild my shifter myself. Now I’m stuck and worried because there’s more to this than I realized. Can you help me?
Yep! Been there, done that with other car repairs myself. The main thing is that we get all of the parts from your shifter to us. There are a LOT of subtle variations in these shifters from model to model. Some of the parts are no longer available and we can’t get them. So it is REALLY important that we get everything that was in your shifter.
Can you keep in touch with me during the rebuild? I want to make sure the cost doesn’t get too expensive.
Absolutely! We always keep our customers aware of parts needed and pricing before we replace anything.
Should I have my internals plated?
Since we can’t paint the internals of your shifter since they move against each other, plating is a way to make them extra rust resistant. Most of the internals are made with high nickel steel so they tend to be rust resistant to begin with. If your vehicle is going to be garage kept and kept off salty roads then plating is less necessary. Plating them is sort of like an insurance plan.
Should I just ship my shifter to you without contacting you or ordering first?
No. Definitely not. We need to have your contact information so we can keep in touch as we perform your rebuild and restoration. We also need an order from you so we know which optional services you want. Placing an order lets us know what you want.
Why can’t I address on your website?
Because we don’t want customer blind shipping to us. Once you place an order and we know what you want, we’ll send you our shipping address along with instructions for shipping to us.
Can you tell me what linkage set I need for my engine and/or transmission?
We can check to see if there is a listing for your vehicle and if there is a Hurst installation and linkage set listed for your vehicle. If there is, we can tell you the Hurst installation kit that you would need. If you are trying to use a 3rd party linkage and mounting kit, there is no way for us to know.
Can you tell me if a Hurst Competition Plus can be used in my vehicle or with my transmission?
We can check to see if there is a listing for your vehicle and if there is a specific engine / transmission listed for your vehicle that Hurst made a shifter for.
Are all Hurst Competition Plus shifters the same? Can I use any of them in my car?
No, they are not all the same. There are a wide number of shift gates that were used that make them different. The shift gates to linkage to transmission geometry is very application specific. You can not just use any Hurst Competition Plus shifter in any vehicle.
I have two shifters and I want to take some of the guts from one of them and put it in the case of the second. Can you do this?
Yes. If you only want us to send back one completed shifter then we will usually take the parts we can salvage that aren’t being used in your rebuild to cover the cost of disassembling both shifters. If you want us to rebuild both shifters then you’ll just need to pay for the 2 rebuilds. If you want one rebuilt shifter returned to you AND you want the un-assembled parts that we don’t use during the rebuild sent back to you as well, then you’ll just have to pay for 1 rebuild plus $40 for the disassembly of the donor shifter.
Your rebuild and restoration sounds so awesome! But my shifter is in great shape other than a part that broke or I want to change shift gates or I want a new pivot arm/stick receiver installed, etc. Can you do this?
Yes. We can make a repair or change a part for you without an entire rebuild and restoration. Just let us know what you need done and we can prepare an estimate for you based on the cost of the part(s) and the time it will take to make the repair.
Still have questions? Want to discuss your shifter?
We want you to be comfortable and have a complete understanding of how we can help you and a rough idea what it would cost. So please feel welcome to email or call us at 724-513-2901 We welcome emailing pictures of your shifter to help us in responding. The best viewpoint is looking “up” into the shifter with the bottom cover removed. That’s the best way for us to see into the guts of your shifter.
